FAQ

What Is Xcluder®?

Xcluder® is a line of products that keep rodents and other pests out of places they don't belong. Xcluder® offers tested and proven rodent and pest exclusion solutions for both residential and commercial situations.

What exactly are “rodent and pest exclusion solutions” and why is this important?

Entomologists and pest professionals worldwide agree that it is always better to PREVENT a rodent or pest problem than to deal with a problem after it has occurred. Exclusion is the cornerstone to preventing a problem as it involves sealing up areas where pests are most likely to enter, denying pests access to places they don’t belong. However remember that rodents in particular are both tenacious and (dare we say) smart. So exclusion efforts are only as good as the techniques and products used. That’s where Xcluder’s proven solutions come in!

How do Xcluder products work?

Xcluder products are made of (or contain) a proven blend of stainless steel and poly fibers which create an impregnable barrier against rodents and other pests. These sharp, coarse stainless steel fibers prevent critters from gnawing or burrowing through it, permanently blocking entry.

When you say Xcluder products are "proven," what does that mean?

Xcluder was tested and proven effective by the USDA / APHIS lab. In addition, Xcluder is the #1 rodent and pest exclusion brand in the world, and is used and trusted by pest professionals across the globe.

Are Xcluder products hard to install?

Not at all. All Xcluder products are designed to be simple to install. Check out our easy-to-follow installation instructions and videos. And if you still have questions? Just get in touch! We’re always here to help.

Do Xcluder products contain poisons or chemicals?

No. There are no poisons or chemicals in our products. Our products do not kill pests – they block pests from entering.

Are Xcluder products eco-friendly?

Yes. As Xcluder products are designed to prevent rodent and pest problems, using Xcluder® can reduce or eliminate the need to use poisons or chemicals, protecting the environment and non-target wildlife.

Do repellants such as peppermint oil, moth balls, and ultrasonic devices work to keep mice and rats out?

No. Despite the frequency with which these solutions are suggested on the internet, there is no scientific evidence to support their efficacy. In fact, the Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management, a university based organization whose mission is to "consolidate existing and future information on integrated pest management (IPM) in wildlife damage management," has conducted extensive research on the topic of mouse repellents and states that there are "No effective ones known, including sonic devices." This includes, Peppermint Oil, Moth Balls, Dryer Sheets, ultrasonic devices, and other heavily promoted herbal type pouches and remedies.

I have a cat. Why would I need Xcluder?

We love our cats! But even if you have a cat that is a strong hunter (many cats just aren’t), cats can’t fix the holes in your house. The rodents are getting in somehow and it’s probably small cracks in your foundation, gaps where pipes enter your home, or even the space under your entry doors. And perhaps more importantly, many vet’s suggest that we discourage our furry friends from chasing or eating mice or rats that get into our house or apartment because wild rodents carry many diseases and parasites that could make pets sick.

What might cause re-infestation inside a rodent-proofed building?

Unfortunately, rodent proofing is not a ‘set it and forget it’ activity. Although Xcluder® products are designed to be permanent solutions, rodents are both tenacious and smart, and will exploit vulnerabilities. For example, rodent re-entry can happen because of one or more of the following issues: Doors and windows are left open, Gaps larger than 1/4” are not sealed, food or other items rodents want continue to be available giving rodents cause to gnaw new openings or dig new burrows. Also, it’s important to be sure that rodents already inside are eliminated prior to rodent proofing, as those already inside will simply continue to breed.

Does steel wool stop mice and rats?

Yes and no. Regular steel wool has been used for years by pest professionals, building managers, and homeowners to keep mice and rats out of structures. However, the problem is that steel wool rusts, and therefore requires regular replacement. Our Xcluder Fill Fabric material combines rust-proof stainless steel wool and poly fibers to create a permanent barrier against mice, rats and other pests. Xcluder will never rust, will never need to be replaced, and will never discolor or stain walls, floors, or tiles (unlike rusty steel wool).

How does Xcluder fill fabric work?

Xcluder Fill Fabric is made of a patented blend of stainless steel and poly fibers which when stuffed in holes, gaps, or cracks, creates an impregnable barrier to rodents and other pests. When properly installed, the synthetic fibers in Xcluder give it an extra spring back that permanently holds it in place and prevents critters from removing it.

How long will the Xcluder Fill Fabric last?

Indefinitely. Since it’s made from stainless steel fiber and will never rust, it is a permanent solution.

How many holes will Xcluder Fill Fabric Fill?

In general, if a typical hole is 1 inch you’ll need about 4 square inches of Xcluder Fill Fabric. If you need to fill the area around a 1-1/2″ pipe, typically 16 square inches is required. Each situation is unique of course, and may require slightly more or less material.

Is Xcluder Fill Fabric eco-friendly?

Yes. Xcluder contains no poisons or chemicals. It's non-toxic and non-corrosive.

Why are gloves recommended when handling Xcluder Fill Fabric?

Xcluder Fill Fabric works because the coarse stainless steel fibers are stiff and sharp. So to protect against any skin abrasion, we recommend wearing work gloves when installing (either your own, or the gloves supplied as part of the Xcluder Fill Fabric kit)

Can I use Xcluder Fill Fabric to fill or cover weep holes?

Yes, absolutely! Xcluder Fill Fabric is ideal for keeping mice and other pests from entering your home through weep holes. Weep holes are essential to your home or building as they allow water to escape and air to circulate to keep the structure dry. Xcluder’s mesh design allows both air and water to easily run through it, while still blocking rodents or other pests from getting inside.

Is Xcluder Fill Fabric safe to use around hot water pipes?

Yes. Xcluder Fill Fabric has been tested and is safe to use in holes, gaps, or cracks where ambient temperatures reach as high as 270º F.

Can I install Xcluder Fill Fabric in or around an electrical enclosure?

The answer to this question depends. Xcluder contains stainless steel fiber which is an excellent electrical conductor, so Xcluder Fill Fabric is not recommended for use close to an open electrical source or unbundled wires. However, use around a fully sealed electrical conduit coming out of a wall is just fine.

Can I use an Xcluder Door Sweep on the bottom of my garage door?

No. For garage doors you’ll want to install an Xcluder Garage Door Seal. And to seal the sides of your garage doors, use the Xcluder Garage Door Rodent Shield.
